Where were you?

A 5.8 earthquake? On the East Coast? WOW! The earthquake of August 23, 2011 had its epicenter in central Virginia. Though they do happen from time to time, earthquakes are rare on the East Coast of the United States. The last sizable earthquake that occurred around here was almost 70 years ago. It was a result of built up pressure from colliding tectonic plates being released.
This was my first earthquake and I have to say that it was a thrilling experience. I was in the art room at Colonel Richardson Middle School with Mr. Plinke when we heard the rumbling and saw the lights swinging back and forth. We quickly made our way outside. At first I thought a large truck had been driving by outside! Shortly after that my wife called me from where she was in Chestertown (45 miles away) to see if I felt it too!
Where were you and what were you doing when the Great East Coast Earthquake of 2011 struck? Share your story!

I was home by myself, in my basement watching Tosh.0. It didn't shake much, but then I got an email from Keri and she freaked out saying she was gonna evacuate her house.

I was at my great grandmother's house while the earthquake happened. I was in the house by myself she was outside. I felt the chair rocking and the flower was rocking too. I was scared out of my mind. I didn't know what was going on. I hurried and sat on the couch I didn't feel anything after that. Then she came into the house. She said it was an earthquake

I was uh.... eatin tootsie rolls....... at the table......

First I had been at a friends house for most of the day. When I got home, I just sat and ate tootsie rolls. Suddenly, the table started shaking as well as everything else and I told Stephen to "Stop shaking the table!" Then my dad freaked out because he had witnessed earthquakes in Mexico. When I realized it was an earthquake-not Stephen-I was just like "Oh." And waited for something to happen. Didn't panic. Just chilled out and ate mah tootsie rolls.
The whole time, my mom and brothers, regardless of where they were, seemed to not be freaked out and just waited as I did.
